World Gratitude Day and the Business of People

ree

Running a business is a lot like raising kids.

You want to set clear expectations. You want to create a safe space to grow. You want to encourage independence, but still be there when things get messy.

And more than anything, you want the people in your care to feel seen and valued.

That’s why World Gratitude Day always lands differently for me. Not just as an HR professional, but as a founder and a mother. It reminds me that at the heart of any strong relationship, whether it’s with your team or your family, is appreciation.

Gratitude isn’t fluffy. It’s foundational.

Why Gratitude Is Good for Business

At VimyHR, we work with organizations that want to build workplaces where people actually want to be. That starts with respect, and it’s strengthened by recognition.

When people feel appreciated, they do better work.

They communicate more openly.

They trust more easily.

And they stay longer.

The research supports this. But as someone who’s helped build teams and helped two kids through everything from toddler tantrums to teenage moods, I can tell you from experience. Feeling valued makes all the difference.

What Gratitude Looks Like at Work

In a business context, gratitude isn’t about big gestures or public praise. It’s in the little moments.

💬 A real thank you after a tough day

👀 Noticing the behind-the-scenes effort

✉️ Sending a message that says, “I saw what you did, and it mattered”

One of the best things we’ve done at VimyHR is create space for our consultants to recognize one another. It takes a moment. But the impact lasts much longer.

What Gratitude Looks Like at Home

My two kids have taught me more about leadership than any course ever could.

Sometimes it’s not about rewarding outcomes. It’s about noticing effort.

Like when my son helps his sister with homework without being asked.

Or when my son takes out the garbage without a reminder. That one still feels like a small miracle.

Acknowledging those little wins shifts the tone. Whether you’re leading a team or guiding a family, those simple moments build confidence and connection.

A Simple Prompt That Changed the Mood

This year for World Gratitude Day, I asked our team to share one word they were grateful for.

That’s it. One word.

It was simple. But it led to bigger conversations about what really matters to each of us.

And yes, I brought that question home too. The answers from my kids were even better.

Whether you're leading a team or parenting two kids in a busy household, one thing stays true.

People need to feel appreciated.

Gratitude doesn’t need a holiday to matter. But having a day like this gives us the reason to pause and remember what makes work and life meaningful.

So here’s my invitation to you. Take a minute today to notice someone.

Not for the big wins. Just for showing up. For trying. For being human.

That’s what the business of people is really about.
